Explanation of retirement costs

Approximately half of the State System's employees are enrolled in the Commonwealth's pension (defined benefit) retirement programs. The remaining half are enrolled in various Alternative Retirement Programs (ARP) that are based on a defined contribution.  The State System’s costs for the State Employee Retirement System (SERS) and Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System (PSERS) were projected to increase $13.2 million as a result of the increase in contribution rates ($11.9 million for SERS and $1.3 million for PSERS).  The employer contribution rates are determined by they Commonwealth. The total estimated costs for retirement contributions, by plan, for FY2013-14 and FY2014-15 are as follows:

FY2013-14 FY2014-15
SERS $    41.6 million $     57.3 million
PSERS 3.9 million 5.2 million
ARP 46.2 million 49.0 million
TOTAL 91.7 million 111.5 million
