Beginning with the 2008-2009 Academic Year

  • The calendar is set up for 70 instructional days during the fall and 69 scheduled instructional days during the spring. Exams are one additional calendar week each semester.
  • During the fall, two non-class days are reserved and are to be scheduled at the discretion of the university (e.g., fall break, extended Thanksgiving holiday, etc). During the spring, universities have discretion on how to handle the time allocation for the 70th day (additional assignments, extended class times, shorter exam week, etc).
  • Classes normally will begin on Monday during the last week of August and final exams end on Friday during the first week in May.
  • Four full calendar weeks are between each semester.
  • Scheduled holidays are Labor Day (first Monday in September), the Thursday and Friday at Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) and Martin Luther King, Jr Day (third Monday in January).
  • Spring break is mid-way in the spring semester (after the 7th week of classes).
  • Saturday classes can be scheduled within this model (with class time on Saturday substituting for other instructional time).
