ConnectYard: Redefining and Enhancing Student Engagement, Retention, and Support

In this session, presenters will discuss the implementation of two educational technologies in communication classrooms (1) ConnectYard, a multifunctional discussion tool that integrates Facebook, Twitter, email and text messaging; and (2) Apple's iPod Touch Mobile Lab, a cart integrating 30 iPod Touch devices, with custom applications developed for this project. The presentation will include a brief introduction to both technologies, an account of their implementation in classroom and co-curricular settings, and a set of recommendations for wider use in the PASSHE system.

Maria A. (Ola) Kopacz, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at West Chester University. She studies the internet's influence on society. One of her interests is the use of technology in higher education.

Mary Braz, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at West Chester University. She is also the creator and director of WCU's Grandparents University. Her primary research interests are in Group Dynamics, Social Influence, and Research Methods.

Philip A. Thompsen, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies. He is a scholar of communication media and technology, with particular interests in broadcasting and computer-mediated communication. He is the department's 'webmaster' and educational technology coordinator.
