Indiana University

Professional Science Master's (PSM) Nanoscience for Industrial Materials

IUP Logo

College of Natural Science and Mathematics

Department of Physics

Proposed Start Date: Fall 2012

The PSM in Nanoscience for Industrial Materials will provide the graduate with preparation necessary to move into management positions within the company.  This professional degree will feature an industrial internship where the student will work with academic faculty and industry partners to acquire practical experience in solving problems encountered in technological business.

Nanotechnology means engineering on a scale of individual atoms to build new materials with atomic precision or to improve properties of exisitng materials.  The applications of Nanotechnology range from medical devices to car paint to protein engineering to optical and opto-electronic materials.  These are fast growing fields with over 100 companies in Pennsyvlania alone working in the field of nanotechnology.

While there are other PSM degree granting institutions, IUP has the advantage of offering a PSM in Nanoscience for Industrial Materials because of the size of the phsyics department, the particular expertise of faculty with the physics, business and management departments, as well as Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS) coupled with thin films, lithography, nano-particle, semiconductor and optical laboratories.

What are the career prospects?

Graduates of the PSM program in Nanoscience for Industrial Materials will enhance the intellectual wealth of Pennsylvania by increasing the number of technically trained workers.  The job prospects of PSM graduates are in many areas including:

  • Electronics/semiconductor industry
  • Optoelectronics
  • Environmental monitoring and control
  • Biotechnology, Forensics, etc.
  • Medical fields, Pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, cosmetics, etc.
  • Food science including quality control and packaging
  • Auto and aerospace industries
  • Sports equipment

Some potential or existing industry partners within the Pittsburg area include the following:

  • PPG
  • II-VI Corporation
  • Plextronix
  • Solid State Measurements
  • Alcoa
  • Westinghouse
  • Air-products

Is the Professional Science Master's (PSM) Nanoscience for Industrial Materials for me?

Student with a Baccalaureate degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering are encouraged to apply to this program.
