Anthem Data Breech

We have now learned that, unfortunately, there is an impact to the State System.  Anthem has worked with Highmark, and has determined that there are 1,087 current/former State System Highmark members whose data was included in this breach. Each person who was impacted will be receiving communication directly from Anthem and Highmark via the US postal mail.


Recently, Anthem, a Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer with plans in multiple states, was the target of a sophisticated external cyber-attack, which may have impacted as many as 80 million individuals. While none of the health plans offered by the State System/PEBTF are directly affiliated with Anthem, it has been determined that some member data for Blue Cross/Blue Shield affiliated plans (including the Highmark PPO plan, Highmark Indemnity Plan, Keystone Health Plan East, Keystone Health Plan Central, and Keystone Health Plan West) may have been compromised in this data breach, due to their participation in the Blue Card program, which allows those members to access in-network care in other states and countries.
