Welcome to Healthy U, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) workplace wellness program that promotes a healthier lifestyle and rewards participants through lower contributions to their health care plan. This program, developed in conjunction with the joint labor/management Health Care Cost Containment Committee, is designed to provide you and your spouse or same-sex domestic partner with resources, tools, and information to help you improve your well-being and become more engaged in every aspect of your health. Depending on your health plan selection and coverage tier, participation in the program could save you thousands of dollars on an annual basis. Even better, you likely will receive the benefits of a longer, healthier life.

What is Healthy U?
Healthy U is the PASSHE workplace wellness program negotiated for faculty, non-faculty coaches, police and security personnel, nurses, and provided through policy to management (see the General Information FAQs). PASSHE has contracted with Highmark Blue Shield to provide services for the program, which began July 1, 2008. Healthy U is a customized plan for PASSHE employees, spouses, and same-sex domestic partners that promotes a phased-in approach to wellness using Highmark’s Wellness Rewards Program. This approach will allow you to become gradually familiar with the resources by initially offering easy steps for you to participate in the program and qualify for the lower health plan contributions. And for those who want to be more proactive about wellness and a healthier lifestyle, the program offers additional voluntary tools and resources that can be explored and used at your convenience. All personal health information you provide as a participant in the program will be kept strictly confidential and participation is voluntary (see FAQs on Confidentiality).
What is Wellness Rewards WebMD?
Wellness Rewards WebMD is Highmark’s on-line program that provides the venue for you and your covered spouse or same-sex domestic partner to complete the requirements for Healthy U. Wellness Rewards WebMD will track your progress in meeting the Healthy U requirements. Entry to Wellness Rewards WebMD is provided through Highmark’s website at www.highmarkblueshield.com.
How do I Qualify for Lower Health Plan Contributions?
Each Healthy U plan year will have different requirements for participation, in addition to different timeframes in which to complete the required activities.
The initial phase of Healthy U began on July 1, 2008, and the participation period ended on November 21, 2008. 80% of eligible PASSHE employees successfully completed the Phase 1 requirements. Participating employees and their covered spouse/same-sex domestic partner completed an on-line Pledge to lead a healthier lifestyle, an on-line Wellness Profile (Health Risk Assessment). As a reward for participation, those employees qualified for the lowest employee health care contributions for the time period January 1, 2009, through June 30, 2009.
The Phase 2 participation period began on January 1, 2009, and ended on May 15, 2009. PASSHE employees achieved an 85% participation rate. Participating employees and their covered spouse/same-sex domestic partner obtained and recorded preventive exams, based upon the age-based preventive exam schedule, and completed a Pledge and Wellness Profile, if one had not been completed during Phase 1. Employees who completed the participation requirements prior to the deadline enjoyed the lowest health care contributions for the plan year beginning July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010.
81% of eligible PASSHE employees successfully completed Phase 3 of Healthy U, which began July 1, 2009, and ended May 31, 2010. To meet the participation requirement, employees and their covered spouse/same-sex domestic partner each needed to obtain a total of 70 Healthy U points. After completing the Pledge and the Wellness Profile (worth 30 points), participants selected from a wide variety of wellness programs and activities to earn the remaining points. Congratulations to the more than 5,000 employees who took advantage of this opportunity to become more engaged in their health and well-being! As a reward for their participation those employees have paid the lower Healthy U health care contribution rates for the plan year which began July 1, 2010, and ended June 30, 2011.
Phase 4 of Healthy U began July 1, 2010, and employees and their covered spouse/same sex domestic partner had until May 31, 2011, to complete the participation requirements. PASSHE employees attained an 83% participation rate. Again, similar to the prior wellness plan year, employees and their covered spouse/same-sex domestic partner each needed to accumulate 70 Healthy U points by completing various wellness programs and activities. These employees are now paying the lowest health care contribution rates effective July 1, 2011.
Healthy U 2011/12
The Healthy U 2011/12 wellness plan year began July 1, 2011 and ended May 31, 2012. The PASSHE-wide participation rate for this phase of Healthy U was 84%. Those employees are paying the lowest health care contribution rates. Consistent with prior years, employees and their covered spouse/same-sex domestic partner each earned a minimum of 70 Healthy U points to successfully complete their participation.
Healthy U 2012/13
The current Healthy U wellness year began September 1, 2012 and ended June 30, 2013.
Healthy U 2013/14
