Intro
Community
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1837, is America’s oldest historically Black institution of higher education. The liberal arts, co-ed university is located on 275 acres in the suburban countryside of southeastern Pennsylvania. The founding of the university was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendants of the African race. Cheyney University boasts a beautiful historic quadrangle with buildings dating to the early 1900s. A new state-of-the-art residence hall opened in 2012 and a new science center and planetarium are expected to open in 2014. Enriched by a local history dating to the formation of the nation, the main campus is located approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware. Cheyney University also also is part of PASSHE's Multi-University Center in Philadelphia, not far from the historic section of the city. Both locations provide students opportunities to experience the many world class cultural, athletic and social events available in the region, including New York City and Washington, D.C.

The
Aquaculture Research and Education Center
(AREC) is designed to help meet the education, extension and research needs of the region and its critical waterways with the objective being to train individuals who can compete for professional jobs in various scientific arenas, both in this country and abroad. Students have an opportunity to major in marine biology with an emphasis in marine biology, aquaculture or aquatic science. Though the development of research programs in urban aquaculture and fish nutrition/physiology are its primary foci, aspects of marine and freshwater biology and ecology, and aquatic animal biology provide part of the program’s foundation. AREC research reaches beyond regional and national boundaries and will provide opportunities for the faculty and students to participate in research and outreach projects that will be conducted in partnership with academic, public and private entities.
