Intro

Community

Almost equal distance between and with easy Interstate highway access to the major cultural and metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, the Borough of Edinboro is a thriving rural community that transforms into a lake resort during the summer months, offers nearby downhill skiing in the winter and features year-round recreational and cultural opportunities.

The town was founded in the late 1790s by Scottish pioneers, who named their new town after their beloved Edinburgh, Scotland. Their legacy lives on in what has become the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education – Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Edinboro is located just 15 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largest city, offering easy access to the Erie Art Museum, historic Warner Theatre, Millcreek Mall and Presque Isle State Park, as well as opportunities to attend performances of the Erie Philharmonic or games of one of the semi-pro and professional sports teams hosted in the city, including the Erie SeaWolves (baseball) and the Erie Otters (hockey).

Highlight1

Edinboro is especially proud of its nationally recognized Art Department. Edinboro’s art programs, which include its highly acclaimed computer animation program as well as graphic design, painting, metalsmithing, photography, sculpture and more, have been recognized frequently for providing a conservatory-quality education at an affordable cost. An EU Art Department alumnus has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in each of the past five years, and the skills of five animation alumni contributed to the success of four 2013 Oscar-nominated films.

Highlight2

The university is also particularly excited about the recent launch of its School of Business. Under Acting Dean Scott Miller, Edinboro's School of Business expands educational opportunities for business majors, enhances the array of employment opportunities after graduation and aids the surrounding region through a new Financial Literacy Institute.

Highlight3

Criminal justice and nursing remain popular offerings, and the school continues its dedication to all levels of teacher education, including one of the nation’s largest and most successful online graduate education programs. Edinboro was ranked 32nd of 208 online master’s degree programs in education in U.S. News & World Reports’ 2013 Best Online Graduate Education Programs.

Profile

Edinboro University President Julie E. Wollman leads a vibrant campus community of more than 7,450 undergraduate and graduate students served by an accomplished and highly motivated faculty and staff of more than 800, all of whom are committed to creating opportunities for intellectual and personal growth in an inclusive environment. Students in Edinboro’s 100 academic majors enjoy state-of-the-art facilities and a low student/faculty ratio as well as 200 clubs and organizations, NCAA athletics, performing arts and a thriving Greek life scene.

The university’s 43 buildings, strategically spaced on a lush 585-acre campus with open fields, wooded areas and five-acre lake, include a seven-story library, suite-style student housing, a 260,000-square-foot student center complete with movie theater and cyber café, new human services building and a music center that contains studios, a piano lab, listening library and recital hall. The university’s iconic 16-foot-high “Fighting Scot” statue, a gift from Edinboro’s 60,000 alumni, links generations of past and present students with all those yet to come.

Edinboro’s Veterans Success Center supports the life transitions and career aspirations of returning soldiers and complements the university’s designation year after year as a "Military Friendly" school by G.I. Jobs. Edinboro also is nationally known for the exceptional services provided by its Office for Students with Disabilities.

In addition to the Edinboro University main campus, the university has a solid presence in Erie with the Porreco Center and in Meadville at the Joseph T. Buba Center. All university locations are connected by free Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority express bus service.
