Indiana University of Pennsylvania is located in the Borough of Indiana in western Pennsylvania, fifty-five miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Resting in the foothills of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, Indiana offers the best of small town and city life. With a population of 35,000, Indiana and its neighboring communities are quiet and picturesque. Several nearby natural areas and state parks provide opportunities for hiking, camping, boating and fishing. The Indiana area is rich in culture from its history of energy resources. The economy is based on energy, health care, education, finance and other service industries.

Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology - IUP offers programs at the undergraduate (Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology) and master’s level (Speech-Language Pathology) through the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services. The clinically oriented program provides clinical training for all settings in which speech-language pathologists practice, ranging from preschools and elementary through secondary schools to hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing facilities. Through accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, master’s graduates meet the academic and practicum requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by that association. They also meet licensure requirements in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as in other states. Over the past fifteen years, the employment rate for master’s graduates has been 100 percent.

Communications Media - The Department of Communications Media prepares students to work in all fields of media: online, radio, television, cable television, public relations, advertising media, media relations and corporate media relations. Award-winning faculty members, who are active practitioners in their fields both on and off campus, help students learn to design, produc, and evaluate media messages in state-of-the-art facilities, including the Applied Media and Simulation Games Center, audio recording studio, graphics and multimedia lab, WIUP-FM radio station, the Digital Media Institute and IUP-TV. Degree programs range from the bachelor’s in Communications Media to the master’s in Adult Education and Communications Technology, to the doctorate in Communications Media and Instructional Technology.

Profile

IUP was founded in 1875 as Indiana Normal School. It achieved university status in 1965. Today, IUP is a comprehensive, doctoral/research university. The university has 750 faculty members and 853 administration and staff members. There are 15,379 full- and part-time students enrolled: 13,058 undergraduate; 2,321 graduate; 2,339 minority (16 percent); and 649 international (5 percent). Students come to IUP from 47 states, three U.S. territories, and 72 countries around the world. The university awarded 1,957 undergraduate degrees, 797 master's degrees and 104 doctoral degrees in 2009-10. There are 112,624 IUP alumni with undergraduate degrees, and another 9,641 with graduate degrees only. Alumni live in every state and in eighty-seven countries around the world. They have included university presidents and the first chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education; chief executives of leading companies and industries; playwrights and authors; and luminaries of the sports world. The university offers 133 undergraduate, 55 master’s and 10 doctoral degree programs. IUP is accredited by the Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education and many of its academic programs also are accredited by professional organizations.
