Intro

Community

Kutztown University is nestled in eastern Berks County among bucolic farms with a view of Appalachian Mountains in the distance. The campus is spread across 330 acres just north of the Borough of Kutztown, a community of approximately 5,000 residents. Less than 80 minutes from Philadelphia and approximately two hours from the center of New York City, the town and university enjoy daily commerce with Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and New Jersey. Kutztown is rich in Pennsylvania German heritage. Early settlers from the Palatinate area of Germany created a vital community in this region of the state. Today, the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, located on campus, works to preserve that tradition. Considered by many to be one of best places to live in Pennsylvania, the rolling hills of Berks County provide a variety of breathtaking landscapes full of quiet trails and parks for biking, hiking and general recreation.

Highlight1

With the exponential demand for graphic designers created by the Internet, Kutztown University’s program in Communication Design is in high demand. Students within this ever-changing field of study are on the cutting edge of computer graphics, advertising, product and web design. Because of the university’s proximity to Philadelphia and New York City, KU’s “CD” program often places interns at major advertising and design firms. Graduates from this program can be found throughout the nation working for top companies creating computer-generated art, greeting cards and even children’s television programming.

Highlight2

Breaking new ground and announcing major discoveries is fast becoming a tradition for Kutztown University’s Department of Geology.  Under the guidance of KU faculty, students spend a portion of their summer vacation on location in hot deserts and remote regions of the world conducting field research that extends the frontiers of research. A recent example is the discovery by a KU research team revealing fossilized evidence of a dinosaur digging into the burrow of a mammal. The news made international headlines and helped scientists across the globe better understand how these two prehistoric creatures interacted.

Profile

Since 1866, Kutztown University has been dedicated to the success of its students. Through the years, the university grew from one building for training future teachers to a 330-acre campus, offering many fields of study in countless facilities. Enrollment went from 776 in 1900, to 1,921 in 1950, to 9,804 today. KU offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees through four individual colleges: Liberal Arts and Science, Education, Business and Visual and Performing Arts. An active and vibrant student life is supported by approximately 160 student organizations including advisory councils, academic, diversified interest and student clubs, pre-professional organizations, honorary societies and more. Students enjoy the benefits of a modern recreation center, fully computerized classrooms and residence halls, a growing digital library, a newly remodeled arts building and gallery, and a student union with all of the comforts. Additionally, the well-maintained and award-winning campus landscape is considered one of the most attractive in the nation.
