Gomulka re-elected chair of Board of Governors

Charles A. Gomulka, president and chief executive officer of G&Z Investments Ltd., a Pittsburgh-based investment banking holding company, has been re-elected to a fifth consecutive one-year term as chairman of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s (PASSHE) Board of Governors.
The Board also elected as its vice chairs, C.R. “Chuck” Pennoni, chairman of the board of Pennoni Associates Inc. of Philadelphia, and Kim E. Lyttle, vice president for public affairs of National City Bank of Pennsylvania.
The 20-member Board of Governors has overall responsibility for planning and coordinating the development and operation of PASSHE, which is the largest provider of higher education in the Commonwealth, enrolling more than 104,000 students. The Board establishes broad fiscal, personnel and educational policies under which the 14 PASSHE Universities operate.
The PASSHE Universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study. Combined, the Universities have about 586,000 alumni, including nearly 400,000 who live in Pennsylvania.
As president and CEO of G&Z Investments, Mr. Gomulka is the firm’s most senior operating officer and its most experienced investment banker. He is responsible for strategic planning and resource management and played a major role in the development of the company’s asset management and corporate finance units.
A certified public accountant and graduate of Point Park College in Pittsburgh, Mr. Gomulka serves as a director of National Waste Industries; FBG Enterprises, Inc.; OnQ Technologies, Inc.; and Alphamagnetics, Inc. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of Point Park College and holds the position of chairman of the board of RRZ Capital Markets, Inc.
Mr. Gomulka was first appointed to the Board in 1997, serving initially on the Human Resources Committee. He was elected Board chairman in 2000, and has been re-elected each year since.
Mr. Pennoni founded his consulting engineering firm in 1966. He also served for a year as president of Drexel University and is a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. He has both bachelor’s and masters degrees in civil engineering and an honorary doctorate from Drexel. He has served as a guest speaker and lecturer at Drexel, Temple, Villanova and Widener universities, as well as at Texas A&M University, Purdue University, Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania and University of Pavia, Italy.
He has served on the engineering advisory boards of Widener University, University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University and on the advisory board of the Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation. He has been licensed as a professional engineer in 11 states, has been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering and is past president of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology and a past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Pennoni was appointed to the Board of Governors in 2003. This is his second term as vice chair. He also chairs the Board’s Academic and Student Affairs Committee.
Mr. Lyttle has been a member of Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees since 1983, currently serving as its vice chair. He serves on the Council’s Student Affairs and Academic Affairs committees and is a member of the University’s presidential search committee. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), currently serving in his second term.
At National City Bank, he is responsible for managing the Charitable Foundation and serving as chief government relations officer. Mr. Lyttle’s experience in the banking industry spans more than 25 years. A graduate of IUP and the Graduate School of Banking of the University of Delaware, Mr. Lyttle has undertaken additional specialized training at the American Bankers Association’s National Personnel and Bank Personnel Graduate Schools at the University of Colorado.
Mr. Lyttle was appointed to the Board of Governors in 1995 and previously served for six years as vice chair. He also chairs the Board’s Advancement Committee.
The Board of Governors comprises the governor or his designee; the state secretary of education or his designee; four state legislators appointed by the respective House and Senate Republican and Democratic caucuses; 11 members appointed by the governor, at least five of whom must be members of University councils of trustees; and three student leaders from PASSHE Universities.
The state-owned Universities are Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania. PASSHE also operates branch campuses in Clearfield, Kittanning, Oil City and Punxsutawney and the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg.
