Commencement programs scheduled at PASSHE Universities

The 2007-08 academic year is winding down, and, as it does, plans for commencement programs are being finalized at all 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities. Below is a listing of each university’s commencement plans, including its scheduled speaker. Unless otherwise noted, the ceremonies will be held on May 10.
Bloomsburg – State Attorney General Thomas Corbett will address graduates in separate ceremonies scheduled for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the academic quad. The morning ceremony will be held for students in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Science and Technology. The afternoon ceremony is for graduates of the Colleges of Business and Professional Studies.
California – Dr. David Amati, a 1970 alumnus and the director of Global Automotive Business and Automotive Headquarters, SAE International, will address undergraduates at a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m., May 10 at Hamer Hall. A separate ceremony for graduate students receiving their degrees will be held at 7 p.m., May 9, also in Hamer Hall. Dr. Harry Serene, a 1965 graduate of Cal U. and retired Pittsburgh area surgeon, will speak.
Cheyney – Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated The Tom Joyner Morning Show and founder of the Tom Joyner Foundation, will address undergraduates. The program will be held at 9 a.m. on the historic Quadrangle.
Clarion – Dr. Gary Alt, wildlife management consultant and former wildlife research biologist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree and will speak at a pair of ceremonies to be held in Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. The ceremony for students from the College of Education and Human Services and the College of Business Administration will be held at 10 a.m., while the ceremony for students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Nursing and Allied Health will begin at 2 p.m.
East Stroudsburg – Dr. Art Scott, president of Northampton Community College, will address undergraduates. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., May 10, and will be held in Koehler Fieldhouse. Dr. Kofi Lomotev, vice president and provost of Fisk University, will address graduate students in a separate ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m., May 9, also in Koehler Fieldhouse.
Edinboro – Commencement will be held at 1 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. An honorary doctorate will be awarded to Mr. Mike Redlawsk. No guest speaker is scheduled.
Indiana – Dr. John J. Kopchick, an internationally recognized leader in the growth hormone field and a 1972 and 1975 alumnus, will receive an honorary Doctorate of Science degree and will serve as the main graduation speaker. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Memorial Field. This year’s commencement will be the first time all graduates will be recognized by name and receive a specially designed diploma cover on stage.
Kutztown – Faculty members Will Rapp and Andrew Arnold will speak at separate ceremonies to be held May 10 in Keystone Fieldhouse. Dr. Rapp will address students receiving undergraduate degrees from the Colleges of Education and Visual & Performing Arts at 9 a.m. Dr. Arnold will speak to graduates in the Colleges of Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences at 2 p.m. Dr. Arifeen Daneshyar will address students receiving master’s degrees at a ceremony to be held at 6 p.m., May 9, in Schaeffer Auditorium.
Lock Haven – Dr. Gary Sojka, former president of Bucknell University, will speak at separate ceremonies scheduled for May 9 and 10. Students graduating from the College of Education and Human Services will receive their degrees at 7:30 p.m., May 9. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences will receive their degrees at 10 a.m. on May 10. Both ceremonies will be held in Thomas Field House.
Mansfield – Former congressman and college and professional basketball player Tom McMillen, a Mansfield native, will speak to graduates at 11 a.m. at Karl Van Norman Field. A graduate of Mansfield High School, McMillen was a three-time All-American in basketball, an academic All-American, and a member of the 1972 Olympic Team.
Millersville – Dr. Kenneth R. Melani, president and chief executive officer of Highmark, Inc., will deliver the commencement address. The program will be held beginning at 10 a.m. in Biemesderfer Stadium.
Shippensburg – Dirk Kempthorne, the 49th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior and a former senator from and governor of Idaho, will speak at separate ceremonies scheduled for undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., May 10, in Seth Grove Stadium. The graduate ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., May 9, in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center.
Slippery Rock – Dr. Helen Sobehart, a 1972 alumna who recently was named president of Cardinal Stritch University, will address graduates. The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
West Chester – Retiring President Dr. Madeleine Wing Adler will speak at separate ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students who will be receiving their degrees. The ceremony for undergraduates will be held at 10 a.m., May 10, in Farrell Stadium. Daniel Blomquist will be the student speaker. Graduate students will receive their degrees in a program to be held at 7 p.m., May 12, in Hollinger Field House.
With more than 110,000 students, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is the largest provider of higher education in the Commonwealth. The 14 PASSHE universities offer degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study. Approximately 405,000 PASSHE alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.
The state-owned universities are Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania. PASSHE also operates branch campuses in Clearfield, Freeport, Oil City and Punxsutawney and several regional centers, including the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg.
