Student government leaders from the 14 state-owned universities have elected their 1999-2000 executive board.
James Moyer, a senior at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, has been elected chairperson of the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Student Government Presidents (BSGP).
Shamaine Daniels of West Chester University of Pennsylvania will serve as vice chairperson; Leslie Suhr of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, secretary/treasurer; and Lutelles White of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, parliamentarian.
The BSGP’s purpose is to establish goals that will help to improve the health, welfare and quality of education for students at the 14 state-owned universities. The presidents of each of the 14 student government organizations comprise the Board, which is expected to provide leadership to the student bodies at the State System institutions, to represent student views and opinions throughout Pennsylvania and to strengthen student government systems.
“These student leaders play a vital role to their universities and to the entire State System of Higher Education,” said Chancellor James H. McCormick. “As representatives of our more than 95,000 students, they offer a perspective that is essential if we are to fully meet all of our students’ needs.”
Moyer is the son of Herbert and Carol Moyer of Fleetwood. He is president of Mansfield University’s Student Government Association and is majoring in criminal justice administration and political science.
Daniels is the daughter of Paulina Gomez of Philadelphia. She is president of West Chester University’s Student Government Association and is majoring in political science/international relations and sociology, with a minor in Spanish.
Suhr is the daughter of Kurt and Sandra Suhr of Natrona Heights. She is president of Clarion University’s Student Senate and is majoring in communications and Spanish.
White is the son of Lutelles IV and Robin White of Cranesville. He is president of Edinboro University’s Student Government Association and is majoring in business administration.
The State System of Higher Education is the largest provider of higher education in the Commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 350,000 System alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.
The state-owned universities are Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania. The System also operates branch campuses in Clearfield, Kittanning, Oil City and Punxsutawney and several regional centers, including the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg and the University Center for Southwest Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh.
