Millersville University of Pennsylvania sophomore Chad A. Schulze of Lebanon won the 14th Collegiate Shootout held as part of the Bob Burgess Memorial Golf Outing at the Country Club of Hershey.

Schulze shot a 71 on Hershey’s East Course to win the event by five strokes over two-time winner James Maack, a senior from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Schulze’s even-par round was the lowest in the history of the 14-year-old tournament.

Twelve student golfers from 11 State System of Higher Education universities and Pennsylvania State University competed for more than $6,000 in scholarships that were awarded to the schools of the top finishers by the Bob Burgess Memorial Foundation.

Millersville University will receive a $3,000 scholarship for Schulze’s first-place finish. IUP will receive a $2,000 award and Clarion University of Pennsylvania will collect a $1,000 scholarship. The money will go into the universities’ general scholarship fund.

Shawn Will, a senior at Clarion University, finished in a three-way tie for third place with a round of 77, then sank a birdie put on the third playoff hole to beat out the two others for the third-place prize. Michael Montgomery, a senior from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, finished fourth, and Michael J. Papson, a junior from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, finished fifth after being eliminated on the second playoff hole.

Because of the three-way tie, Burgess Foundation officials decided to award two additional scholarships to the schools of the fourth and fifth place finishers. Bloomsburg University will receive a $500 scholarship and Slippery Rock University, a $250 award.

The Bob Burgess Memorial Golf Outing is held each year to raise funds for a Central Pennsylvania charity. Proceeds from this year’s event, which included more than 350 golfers who played on three different courses, will go toward the creation of the Bob Burgess Second Mile Leadership Institute.

The institute will bring together 100 young people from 20 high schools across the state in an intensive training program designed to develop community leadership skills. The institute is being created in conjunction with the Second Mile Foundation, a program founded by Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

The Bob Burgess Memorial honors the memory of Bob Burgess, a former government relations specialist for Beneficial Financial Management. He and his daughter, Pamela, died in an automobile accident in 1983. The foundation also contributes a separate $3,000 scholarship each year to Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where Pamela was a student.

Student golfers from the 14 state-owned and four state-related universities are invited to participate in the Collegiate Shootout portion of the annual event.
