Empowering women in robotics
Hecmarys Cintron
Freshman, Automation and Robotics Engineering Technology Major

As a first-generation college student, I wasn't sure what to expect from higher education,
but I knew I wanted to pursue a career in a STEM field. I was fortunate that J.P.
McCaskey High School in Lancaster offered numerous innovative opportunities for me
to engage in science, technology, engineering, and math classes.
Ultimately, it was a robotics class that truly captured my interest. I enjoy the process
of taking an idea and bringing it to life. Robotics involves numerous activities,
including designing, programming, wiring, and building robots. This variety keeps
you engaged, as each project presents unique challenges.
During my senior year, I learned about the Robotics WorX program, a collaboration
between Millersville University and Precision Cobotics, LLC. As a high school student,
this initiative gave me the opportunity to gain hands-on engineering experience on
a college campus. Through this program, I earned academic credit, collaborated with
others, and enhanced my skills and knowledge.
It also confirmed my interest in robotics and developing solutions for real manufacturing
problems. I was introduced to more women in the field, which boosted my confidence
to pursue my dreams and earn a college degree.
As a college student, I have felt an increased level of pressure. However, professors
like Dr. John Haughery have helped me adjust to this new environment and introduced
me to the Robotics Club. I was also allowed to assist at Robotics WorX events, working
with high school students and supporting them in the same way that college students
supported me.
I can pursue my studies in robotics thanks to the financial aid provided by Millersville
University. The PASSHE universities offer excellent programs at affordable prices,
enabling students like me to chase our dreams without the stress of financial burdens.
I am truly grateful for the opportunities this creates for all of us!
I advise high school students to follow their hearts and pursue their dreams. When
an opportunity arises that genuinely interests them, take the chance and go for it;
you never know what doors it may open for them in the future.
If you are passionate about or interested in robotics, I recommend exploring the Robotics WorX program at Millersville University!
